Attack on Pakistan military base
Friday, 27 January 2012 17:02

Pakistan-Abbottabad-mapAttackers have fired several rocket-propelled grenades at the Pakistan Military Academy, about 50km (30 miles) north of the capital Islamabad.

The building is located in Abbottabad, near the compound where Osama Bin Laden was killed by US special forces in May last year.

Friday's attack damaged a wall but no casualties have been reported.

It was unclear who was responsible but security forces have mounted a search, officials said.

The Pakistan Military Academy is the country's top training centre, the equivalent of West Point in the US or Britain's Sandhurst.

The fact that Bin Laden's compound was located nearby came as an embarrassment to Pakistan.

This is thought to be the first rocket attack in Abbottabad, a hill resort popular with tourists. It has seen little of the Taliban insurgency which has gripped north-west Pakistan over the last few years.

The attack comes days after the US claimed it killed alleged al-Qaeda operative Aslam Awan, also known as Abdullah Khorasani, in a recent drone strike in north-west Pakistan.

Mr Awan was from Abbottabad and some analysts believe that the attack may be linked to his death.
