Witnesses told Reuters that police fired rubber bullets and tear gas into a crowd of stone-throwing protesters who were demanding political reforms in the strategic Gulf country.
The military moved in to secure the area, the news agency said.
Al-Jazeera, meanwhile, reported that protesters had come from all over the country to demand reforms in both Sohar and the city of Salalah.
The protests in Oman come amid anti-government uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa, with the biggest demonstrations in Libya, Bahrain, Tunisia and Egypt.
